Woman slices own stomach open, survives

An ill old woman in Chongqing Municipality performed shocking surgery on herself during a particularly acute bout of illness recently.

Wu Yuanbi, 53, suffers from Budd-Chiari syndrome, a chronic condition that causes the belly to fill with fluid. When first diagnosed 12 years ago, she and her family pooled all their savings for a procedure to release a whopping 25 kilograms of water from her midsection, yet a recent relapse saw the family too poor to afford the 50,000 yuan ($7,683) for a second operation.

On the evening of May 8, unable to bear the pain, she slit herself open with a knife to relieve the pressure. Her husband having left for work, she endured the misery for hours alone and in silence on her bed, unsure of whether she would survive the night but figuring that even if she died, "At least I'll have spared my family the trouble of looking after me."

A few hours later, her husband, Cao Yunhui, returned to find his wife with a 10 centimeter-long wound on her stomach and lying in a pool of yellow fluid mixed with intestines. Wu was immediately sent to the hospital, where she was saved miraculously. She is now recuperating at home, though her situation is still precarious.
